A parable… for what it’s worth

A guy named Kevin drops his debit card in our parking lot. It gets turned into the Treasure Chest, and then comes to the office. We Google his name, but can only find a video clip of him promoting the Blues & Brews event in Waynesboro. There’s no contact info for that event online, but he also mentions in the clip that he has a connection to the Wayne Theater. Their box office volunteer doesn’t know him, but passes us on to an employee who does. She says she’ll give him our number. He calls, comes over the mountain an hour later, and he’s reunited with his checking account.

The Good News: He’s thrilled he got his card back.

The Sad News: He’s amazed he got his card back.

At any point in this story, it could have easily ended – and anywhere else, it well might have. But not here in Nelson, and surely not here at the Rock. Because doing the right thing might not always be easy, but we know it’s always worth the effort.

Like tracking down Kevin to return his card, everything we do here supports our mission to engender community. Our Board, our staff, and our amazing volunteers work their tails off for you, our members, building a place for community to happen, and after 23 years at this, we know the effort is worth it.

And over those 23 years, you have repaid the favor by growing our membership ranks to over 800 of our neighbors because you know that growing RVCC is worth the effort as well.

We hope you’ll continue to express your support for this community we’ve built by renewing or upgrading your membership for 2024. Membership dues are being held at last year’s levels, and renewing or joining is as easy as clicking the links* below.

As Kevin was leaving the office a couple of weeks back, he shook his head in wonder and gratitude that we would go the extra mile to track him down, and mentioned that he hoped some day to live in a community as cool as ours.

We hope some day he helps create a community like ours, so he’ll have the joy of knowing just how much that effort is worth.

Thanks, as always, for helping show the Kevins of the world how it’s done.
