Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga that uses gentle long held postures practiced with an attitude of compassionate acceptance to awaken the more Yin (feminine) parts of our physical, emotional and spiritual selves. A meditative approach to yoga, yin aims at cultivating awareness of inner silence and is an opportunity to step outside our usual judgements and desires and to be at peace. Through the practice of Yin we can help bring health to our bodies and balance to our busy Yang (masculine) style lives. Another intention of Yin yoga is to promote the physical and energetic health of the connective tissue around the joints by applying moderate stress to the tendons, fascia, and ligaments with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. To do this we put gentle physical stress on these tissues by controlled stretching. Since everyone’s body is different, yin yoga promotes the use of cushions and blankets for support in the poses. The practice of yin yoga cultivates concentration and mindfulness to remain present in the poses.
Rebecca’s Bio: After many years of studying and performing ballet and modern dance, the gift of yoga provided a natural transition to stay strong, creatively curious, and mentally disciplined minus the stress of competition. She began her teacher training at the Iyengar Institute in San Francisco, but was sidelined by a back injury that had its roots in years of dancing. Yoga was the cornerstone of her recovery, not only on a physical level, but through years of careful loving care from teachers who helped her to overcome her fears about hurting her back again, realign her body from its years of compensating, and regain confidence. Rebecca received her teaching certification through YogaWorks at Yoga Source, Richmond, VA in 2003. Her primary instructors there were Sandra Pleasants and Jennifer Elliot. Additional certification includes training to teach yoga to people with Multiple Sclerosis. Before that she studied with Manuso Manos at the Iyengar Institute in San Francisco and taught locally. She continues to study in Afton, VA with Sandra Pleasants. Rebecca has recently completed training in Yin Yoga with Biff Mithoefer. Her teaching is informed by many streams of interest including dance, an ongoing study of physiology and anatomy, and a sense of humor.
